For Immediate Release:

 (Jefferson County, Kansas- July 2, 2020) 

Earlier this week Governor Kelly announced she will sign an Executive Order requiring the majority of Kansans to wear a mask while in a public space. Counties may also exercise authority granted by K.S.A. 48-925 as amended by 2020 Special Session House Bill 2016, Sec.33 to accept the order, amend the order or adopt provisions that are more stringent or less stringent than the order. 

Today during a special commission meeting, after much discussion, it was decided that local government would not mandate masks but would strongly recommend that individuals wear masks in public places when unable to socially distance. 

As of today, there has been Twenty- seven (27) positive cases of COVID-19 in Jefferson County. Twenty-three individuals have recovered, there are currently four active cases and zero (0) deaths have been reported. 

The Jefferson County Health Department continues to monitor residents in quarantine and those who are pending results per the Kansas Department of Health and Environment surveillance system.

 In order to protect yourself and those residents in Jefferson County who are at risk for severe illness we encourage you to: 

• Continue good hand hygiene, and limit hand contact with the face 

• Social Distance when appropriate and maintain six (6) feet from others 

• Stay home if you are ill 

• Wear a mask when unable to social distance 

• Boost your immune system- eat a balanced diet, get adequate sleep, increase exercise, and reduce stress
