1. What can I expect when I go to the polls?

There may be a line of people waiting to vote. When you reach the registration table, you will be asked to verify your name and address and sign the registration book to show you voted. You will be offered either a paper ballot or an electronic ballot. There will be table provided for you to sit and vote, or, if you vote by touch screen, you will have an electronic terminal to vote on. On the touch screen, you will have a chance to review your ballot before casting it. If you vote by paper ballot, you can review the ballot and then place it in the vote counter.

2. What’s the best time of day to vote at the polling place?

The best times are mid-morning and mid-afternoon when others are at work.

3. What if I am going to be out of town on election day?

You can vote in advance. An advance ballot application is available from the Secretary of State’s website. You can also call (785) 863-2272 and ask that one be mailed to you.

4. Does my vote make a difference?

Absolutely! While you may not be able to see it in a national election, your vote will make a difference in local elections that you can see. There have been several elections where just a few votes separated the winner from the loser. In 1996, the commissioners race was won by four votes.
