About Senior Services
The Jefferson County Health Department collaborates with the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging, the group assisting the Kansas Department on Aging for the county. Together they determine and provide health care needs for Jefferson County residents over the age of 60 years who may have the ability to live within their own home if given minimal assistance with their daily activities.
Services provided may be paid for through federal funding from the Older American’s Act (OAA), an individual’s private long-term care insurance, or the individual’s personal funds. Services may also be provided through Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) for those senior citizens who qualify for those state-operated programs.
For more information, please see our Senior Services Brochure
Services provided for either Older American’s Act programs or HCBS are directed by the individual’s case manager and might include such services as:
- Light housekeeping (limited meal preparation, laundry, changing bedding, dish washing, vacuuming, sweeping, etc.)
Personal nail care can be provided to individuals experiencing difficulty in trimming the nails of their feet. Individuals may call the Health Department at (785) 403-0025 to schedule an appointment for this service.
Another service provided through collaboration with Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging and the Older American’s Act is the provision of free health screening services in the communities throughout the county.
Quarterly community health screening
sites are held in four communities throughout the county to provide opportunity for anyone, especially those over 60 years of age, to have specific health screening services completed within their own community. This provides an opportunity for individuals to have a professional nurse complete a screening requested by the individual’s primary care provider without requiring extra travel and expense to the individual. Those served receive a written screening result to share with their primary care provider at the next office visit with that provider.
