1. Does the county Road Department maintain state or federal highways?

No, the Road Department only maintains county roads.

Note: Most state and federal highways have a "K" or "U.S." preceding the number, like K-92 or US-59.

2. What is the policy regarding entrances onto county roads?

The county requires a permit application filled out by county personnel either by phone or in person, of which the road superintendent does a visual inspection of the landowner's desired location to determine the proper type of entrance, mound, or culvert, and to check sight distance for a safe entry.

If a culvert is needed, the landowner is responsible for furnishing a brand new metal corrugated culvert of a size determined by the road superintendent on-site and for providing any other materials needed for the installation the first time. The county will install and maintain it at no cost to the landowner after that.

3. Does the county Road Department have wood chips or mulch for public use?

The Road Department stockpiles wood chips and mulch at the Oskaloosa shop for public use. There is no charge unless the county loads it, in which case there is a $10 charge per load.
